The Judicial Panel of Inquiry, set up by the Ebonyi State Government, to investigate all issues of alleged Police brutality, has commenced sitting in the state.
The eight-man panel chaired by Retired Justice Alloy Nwankwo was sworn in by the State Governor, Dave Umahi, a fortnight ago, following the public outcry on brutality and human rights abuses perpetrated by the security agents in Nigeria.
The public outcry which culminated in national protests, tagged #EndSARS, came with so many demands, among which was the public investigation of the extrajudicial killings, brutality, and human rights abuses by some police personnel against the citizens.
The Judicial Panel of Inquiry is, therefore, aimed to address such complaints and cases, and to give justice to the victims and their families.
With just six months for the panel to determine all cases brought before it, the Panel’s Chairman said they are poised at ensuring restitution to victims, without fear or favour saying the Panel has so far received five petitions.
