The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) on Friday released the names and photographs of some of the 1,884 inmates of its Owerri facility who escaped on Monday.

The identities of 36 of such inmates were published by the NCS on its website while the Police Command in Akwa Ibom State confirmed the arrest of one David Ubong said to be one of the inmates on the run.

The NCS said more names and pictures would be released in due course.

Spokesman for the Akwa Ibom Police Command, Odiko Macdon, said in Uyo that Ubong confessed to having escaped from the correctional centre.

Macdon said that the suspect would be returned to Imo to face his jail term

He said: “Until his conviction, the suspect was a resident of Obinze in Owerri, Imo State. Suspect will be sent back to face his jail term.”

On the security in Essien Udim LGA of Akwa Ibom, Macdon quoted the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Andrew Amiengheme, as saying a mop up operation was ongoing in the area.

Amiengheme urged residents of Essien Udim and its environs to remain calm but be security conscious.

He pledged that security agencies would continue to do their best in restoring peace, law and order in the area and state at large.

The Owerri Correctional Centre was attacked on Monday by gunmen who threw the gates open and set the building and some vehicles on the premises ablaze.
