Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, may not be a charming and charismatic
personality, but what he lacks in this regard, he makes up with his political
sagacity. To say the least, the senator representing Abia South senatorial
constituency in the upper legislative chamber is reputed to be a suave and
ruthless politician, a statesman of sort, who has fought many political
battles and in the process garnered a lot of experience in state craft.
Smarting from a ‘political war’ with his former boss and the then Governor
of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, which saw him escape an impeachment
plot in 2002, the feeble-looking political marksman later rallied his Ukwa-
Ngwa sub-ethnic nationality to contest for the governorship of the state
under the platform of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2003.
He lost the bid and had to return to People’s Democratic Party (PDP), at
least to remain politically relevant. From near political oblivion, he made a
rebound in the 2007 polls when he was elected the senator representing
Abia South Senatorial district. Since then, he has remained in the political
limelight for the right or wrong reasons combined.
For some time now, he has been in a boiling cauldron, politically speaking,
for daring the ‘cabal’ in ‘Aso Rock’ by signing a bail bond for IPOB leader,
Nnamdi Kanu. The last is yet to be heard about his battle in the court to
save himself from going to jail for failing to produce Kanu in the court.
Recently, he also came on the ‘firing line’ on the floor of the senate for his
audacity to describe President Buhari as ‘incompetent’.
Notwithstanding the uproar by the ‘establishment senators’, Abaribe was
acclaimed for his boldness to challenge the insensitivity and the inability of
the security apparatuses to stem the orgy of violence engulfing some of
the northern states, which of course has resulted severally to loss of
innocent lives. The development as it were became a leverage politically
for Abaribe to reposition and overhaul his political machinery for future
political challenges. But that is by the way.
Now, Abaribe is facing severe opposition to his political survival, especially
his re-election bid as senator for Abia South come 2019. Presently he is in
his third term in the upper house. The war song is championed by people
from his immediate electoral constituency, especially the Ukwa bloc which
is claiming that the senatorial slot, come 2019, should rightly be zoned or

conceded to them on grounds of equity. Politicians from that bloc are
making frantic moves to clinch the Abia South senatorial slot. They argue
that after former Senate President, Adolf Nwabara’s tenure, no Ukwa man
has been elected into that position contrary to an earlier ‘agreement’ that
would see the two political blocs in a power sharing alliance to ensure
equity. Abaribe who incidentally was one of the major protagonists of ‘otu
onu’ (give us just one chance) group, during Orji Kalu’s regime has been in
the senate since 2007 and his close associates have hinted that the old
political war horse is oiling his political machinery and structures for a re-
launch in the 2019 elections for a fourth term. This development does not
go down well with prominent Ukwa politicians who argue that for the sake
of equity and balance of interests, the Abia south senatorial slot should be
conceded to them. Both Government Okezie Ikpeazu and Senator Abaribe
are also from the same political bloc in the Obingwa Local Government
Area within the Abia South Senatorial district.
The top contenders for now are Dr. Solomon Ogunji, an astute and
upcoming politician and a close confidante of Governor Ikpeazu, Rt. Hon.
Emeka Stanley, a former Speaker of Abia House of Assembly, and Chief
Chris Nkwonta who contested the 2015 Senatorial elections against
Abaribe and may decide to stage a come back on the platform of All
Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA). Ogunji, once a political ally and
Abaribe’s loyalist is no push over in the tussle. Besides his closeness to
Governor Ikpeazu, he is reputed to be a grassroots mobilizer and
consummate politician and die-hard who never give up easily. On the
other hand, Senator Abaribe is Ikpeazu’s kinsman and is known to have a
larger than life influence on him at during the early days of his regime.
Already there appears to be cracks on the wall and it remains to be seen
how the matter will be resolved with the political family either in favour of
experience or equity.
There is also Hon. Emeka Stanley, who observers say has legislative
experience to his advantage. He is also said to have the support of
prominent politicians from the Ukwa area. Chief Nkwonta, who is believed
to have large financial arsenal to execute a successful compaign,
commands a large followership and influence in the Ukwa/Ngwa political
circle. How the political pendulum will swing would depend on whether he
decides to or not to join the political fray as well as the political manouvres
and outcomes of party primaries and conventions within the next few
months.
