The Federal High Court in Abuja has strongly criticized former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello for allegedly attempting to obstruct the criminal case initiated against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Justice Emeka Nwite delivered the ruling on Friday, reiterating an earlier order issued on April 17, directing security agencies to arrest and produce Bello before the court to face a 19-count charge.

The court accused Bello of showing disrespect and disregard for the judicial process by engaging lawyers to challenge its jurisdiction while evading arrest. According to the court, Bello’s actions indicate his intention to evade trial and his failure to respect the court’s authority.

Justice Nwite emphasized that disobeying a court order and showing contempt for the court would not result in favorable treatment. He highlighted that under the Nigerian Constitution, all individuals and authorities are obliged to comply with court orders. By willfully disobeying the court’s order, Bello was considered to be in contempt of court.

The judge stated that Bello’s refusal to appear in court was an attempt to derail the legal proceedings and prevent the court from assuming jurisdiction in the case. He emphasized that Bello’s absence undermined the integrity of the court and demonstrated a lack of respect for judicial processes.

Furthermore, Justice Nwite cited previous rulings by the Supreme Court condemning similar actions, reinforcing the seriousness of Bello’s conduct. He concluded that no application could be entertained in the case until Bello appeared in court to enter his plea.

Bello, who served as Kogi State Governor for eight years, is facing charges related to alleged money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of public funds totaling approximately N80.2 billion.
