The Federal Government has announced that the newly established student loan scheme will be implemented in phases, beginning with federal institutions. This announcement was made by Akintunde Swayerr, Managing Director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, during an interview with Arise Television on Friday.
Swayerr revealed that the student loan application portal is set to open on May 24, allowing students to apply for financial assistance. The government is currently conducting a sensitization campaign to inform the public about the mechanics of the loan scheme.
“This scheme is designed to bridge the financial gap for students in Nigeria, helping them become more resourceful and ultimately benefiting the country,” Swayerr explained. He emphasized the comprehensive nature of the fund, which will cover all tuition fees at tertiary institutions and provide additional upkeep support for students.
On April 3, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed a significant act into law to address the financial challenges faced by students pursuing higher education and vocational training. This initiative aims to make education more accessible and affordable, thus enhancing the marketability and usefulness of graduates to Nigerian society.
The phased rollout will prioritize public institutions due to the high number of students requiring financial aid in this sector. “The first phase will focus on federal institutions, followed by other public sector institutions, because they house the majority of students who need financial support and are most vulnerable,” Swayerr stated.
He assured that the system is designed to ensure a national spread and equal opportunities for all eligible and capable students who wish to participate in the scheme.
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions among the public. While some are optimistic about the potential benefits of the student loan scheme, others remain skeptical about its implementation and effectiveness.
