The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has strongly condemned the Federal Government’s recent appointment of new governing councils for federal universities, demanding the reinstatement of previously dissolved council members.
According to ASUU, the appointment of new governing councils violates university autonomy and the Universities Miscellaneous Act of 1993. The union’s Bauchi zone, comprising executives from six universities, made this known after a meeting in Gombe State. Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Namo Aku, emphasized that the union did not request fresh appointments for boards, but rather the reinstatement of previously sacked members.
The dissolution of governing councils has led to vice-chancellors acting unilaterally and introducing policies detrimental to university culture. ASUU has also called for the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, which has been stalled since 2017. The union is seeking improved working conditions, funding, and autonomy for universities.
