Despite his impeachment by over 20 members of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Speaker Elvert Ayambem has declared that he remains the head of the assembly.

Ayambem’s impeachment was carried out on Tuesday after a motion for his removal was moved by the member representing Calabar South 1, Effiong Ekarika, and seconded by Charles Omang. However, the speaker has declared the process null and void, alleging that Akarika disrupted the session by inviting hoodlums into the chamber.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Matthew Okache, on Wednesday, Ayambem said, “The Cross River State House of Assembly has been alerted to false news reports that the Speaker, Elvert Ayambem, has been impeached. To be clear, the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly is, without a doubt, Elvert Ayambem. He is still in office.”
