Former Minister of Education, Mrs. Obiageli Ezekwesili, has vehemently stated that she will not sing the old national anthem, recently reinstated by President Bola Tinubu.

Ezekwesili made her stance clear in a post on her X handle, emphasizing her right to dissent from what she considers an “obnoxious law” repugnant to all people of good conscience in Nigeria.

In her statement, she outlined her commitment to singing the current national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” and expressed her dedication to the ideals it represents, including serving the fatherland with love, strength, and faith, and building a nation of freedom, peace, and unity.

The former minister’s declaration comes in the wake of the Senate and House of Representatives passing the National Anthem Bill 2024, which seeks to reinstate the old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.” The move sparked controversy, with questions raised about its relevance amidst pressing national challenges, particularly economic concerns.

Julius Ihonvbere, the sponsor of the bill, argued for patriotism and nationalism, while others, like Ahmad Satomi, challenged its relevance to Nigeria’s urgent issues.

Ezekwesili’s firm stance reflects a broader debate within the Nigerian public sphere regarding national identity and symbols, with differing opinions on the significance of the national anthem in addressing the country’s challenges.
