The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that the officers involved in the incident leading to the killing of a civilian by okada (commercial motorcycle) riders were on an unauthorized assignment. The police authorities have detained these officers and clarified that the deceased was a civilian, not a policeman.

The incident gained widespread attention after a disturbing video surfaced online, showing several okada riders running over the body of a dead man. Initial comments suggested that the deceased might have been a police officer, prompting an official response from the Lagos State Police Command.

Police Statement Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, provided details via a tweet on his official X (formerly Twitter) page. He stated, “Two police officers attached to the Lagos State Task Force on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, went on illegal duty, taking some civilians with them to shore up their number. They came under attack from motorcycle riders, resulting in the death of one of the civilians.”

Hundeyin emphasized that the video circulating online does not depict a police officer but rather a civilian who was part of the unauthorized operation. He confirmed that disciplinary actions have begun against the detained officers, and efforts are underway to locate their civilian accomplices.

Investigation and Accountability The police command has initiated an investigation to identify, arrest, and prosecute those responsible for the heinous act. Hundeyin assured the public that the perpetrators would face justice.

Public Reaction The graphic nature of the video has sparked outrage and calls for accountability. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about illegal activities by law enforcement personnel and the resultant dangers to civilians.

The Lagos State Police Command continues to reassure the public of its commitment to maintaining law and order while addressing misconduct within its ranks.
