Nigerian Army Vows to Defend Democracy Amid Nationwide Protests

In response to ongoing protests against bad governance and calls for an unconstitutional change of government, the Nigerian Military High Command has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s democracy. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, emphasized that the military stands firm in its resolve to protect Nigeria’s democratic institutions and will oppose any attempt to undermine them.

The military’s stance comes as troops across the country have continued their operations against insecurity. Over the past week, they have neutralized 108 terrorists, arrested 204 criminal elements, and rescued 214 kidnapped hostages. These operations have also led to the discovery and destruction of illegal refining sites, denying oil thieves an estimated N1.34 billion in revenue.

Major General Buba highlighted the military’s readiness to confront emerging threats, particularly those related to the recent protests, which have taken a violent turn. He reassured the public that the armed forces will not allow any group to derail the democratic process, and they remain committed to ensuring stability and supporting the government’s efforts to address poverty and hardship.

In addition to their role in preserving democracy, the military’s operations over the past week have resulted in significant successes across various regions. In the North East, troops of Operation Hadin Kai neutralized 47 terrorists, rescued 130 hostages, and recovered a large cache of weapons and ammunition. Similar successes were recorded in the North Central, North West, South-South, and South East regions, where the military continues to target and dismantle criminal networks.

The military’s actions also included the arrest of a soldier in Borno State, who was found in possession of arms and ammunition intended for terrorists. This arrest underscores the military’s ongoing efforts to root out internal collaborators and maintain discipline within its ranks.
