The Organising Committee of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement has called for the immediate dismissal of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, following the killing of protesters across the country. This demand was made during a candlelight symposium held on Friday at the Rights House in Ikeja, Lagos State, in honor of the victims.

The committee, based at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos, had earlier declared three days of mourning for those killed during the ongoing nationwide protests. Amnesty International has accused Nigerian security forces of killing at least 21 protesters during the demonstrations against economic hardships.

Hassan Taiwo, the National Spokesperson of the Youth Rights Campaign and a member of the committee, emphasized the urgency of removing the IGP, citing that over 40 people have lost their lives during the protests. He stated, “We are demanding the sacking of the Inspector General of Police.”

The candlelight procession organized by the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) was expected to move to Alausa after the symposium. However, protesters were blocked by police officers from proceeding to the Alausa area and were instead offered an alternative route. Despite this, Taiwo urged the group members to maintain control of the procession and not allow the police to dictate their actions, stressing that their peaceful approach should not be mistaken for cowardice.
