Lagos Monthly Environmental Sanitation Coming Back Soon – Commissioner

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to reintroduce the monthly environmental sanitation exercise to promote a healthier and cleaner environment across the state. This initiative was confirmed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, during a sanitation awareness campaign held at Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) on Sunday.

Accompanied by several key officials, including Bariga LCDA Chairman Kolabi Alabi, Special Adviser on The Environment Engr. Olalekan Rotimi-Akodu, and representatives from the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), and other stakeholders, Wahab emphasized the government’s commitment to improving environmental cleanliness.

The awareness campaign was part of a broader initiative aimed at preparing communities for the return of the monthly sanitation exercise. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had previously hinted at the reintroduction of the exercise due to the “appalling state” of cleanliness observed in various communities. The governor stressed the importance of regular sanitation to prevent disease outbreaks and promote healthy living.

Wahab stated that the monthly sanitation would be officially announced by the governor after the ongoing awareness, sensitization, and advocacy programs are completed. The current advocacy campaign has already visited several areas, including Lagos Island, Mushin, and Ajeromi-Ifelodun, with plans to extend to other local government areas in the coming weeks.

Residents are urged to prioritize continuous cleaning of their homes, surroundings, and street drainages to support the government’s efforts in maintaining a clean environment.
