Nigerian oil spillage regulator, the National Oil Spillage Detection and Response Agency ( NOSDRA ), has asked a federal high court, to fine AITEO Eastern Exploration  and Production Company, and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company an insignificant one million naira ( $625) for failing to clean up a major oil spill in November at the Oil Milling Lease (OML), 29 wellhead in Santa Barbara, Nembe Creek.

NOSDRA’s proposed sanction on Aiteo – a $625 fine for 100,000 barrels of crude spilled into the Niger Delta, plus daily penalties until judgment – pales in comparison to the scale of the damage in Nembe.
