In a vibrant show of youth engagement and civic responsibility, the Nigerian Youth Parliament, Sokoto State Chapter, on Sunday, organized a landmark Youths and Stakeholders Townhall Meeting at the Grand New Shukura Hotel in Sokoto.

The event, held under the theme “Repositioning Sokoto Youth to Foster Unity and Peace for Democratic Development in Sokoto State,” brought together critical stakeholders, student leaders, women representatives, security agencies, the media, and distinguished guests to deliberate on the role of young people in promoting peace, unity, and democratic governance.

Delivering the opening remarks, Hon. Sa’adatu Sani Shagari, Member representing Sokoto South Senatorial District, emphasized the importance of youth participation in governance.

“This gathering is more than an event; it is a call to action, a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and shared responsibility,” she declared.

“The strength of any society lies not in its silence, but in the inclusion of diverse voices, especially those of the youth.”

In a highlight of the program, Aliyu Ahmed Aliyu, son of the Sokoto State Governor, delivered a passionate speech encouraging youth to embrace active citizenship and entrepreneurship.

“We must be strong and do everything we can. If we don’t contribute, we will not get our money back,” he said, urging young people to take responsibility for societal transformation.

He noted the growing trend of youth shifting from dependency on government to entrepreneurship. “Today, many are taking to small businesses, selling samosas, peanuts, leveraging platforms like TikTok and WhatsApp.

” This mindset of self-reliance is something we’ve never witnessed before, and it is inspiring.”

Speaking on gender inclusivity, Aliyu affirmed support for women’s involvement in governance but stressed the importance of merit. “Women should be part of the decision-making table, but not at the expense of capable individuals. If the inclusivity is rational, why not?”

The event also served as a platform for key ministries to highlight their support for youth development, with the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, represented by the Permanent Secretary, playing a pivotal role in facilitating the dialogue.

In his closing remarks, Hon. Ra’is Umar, Member representing Sokoto East Senatorial District, commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his commitment to youth empowerment and acknowledged the ministry’s tireless efforts.

“It is evident that Sokoto State is dedicated to fostering youth development through various initiatives. Your presence here today signifies hope and a shared commitment to our future.”

The townhall meeting concluded with resounding calls for sustained collaboration, inclusive governance, and continuous investment in youth-driven development.
