The arrest of former Sokoto State Governor and serving Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reignited national debate over the independence of Nigeria’s anti-graft agencies and the alleged use of state institutions to silence political opposition.
Tambuwal, a former Speaker of the House of Representatives and two-term governor, was taken into EFCC custody last Monday over alleged financial improprieties during his tenure in Sokoto State. While details of the probe remain sketchy, the move has been met with sharp criticism from opposition figures who say it fits a pattern of selective enforcement under the APC-led Federal Government.
In Sokoto, the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described the arrest as politically motivated and aimed at weakening a “gathering coalition” against what it termed the “misrule” of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.
Publicity Secretary of the Sokoto PDP, Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, said in a statement that the EFCC was reviving an “old phantom case” that had failed to produce evidence in the past. He accused political actors in Abuja and Sokoto of orchestrating the probe to tarnish Tambuwal’s image and force him into silence.
Analysts note that the controversy comes at a time of heightened political tensions, with the opposition accusing the ruling party of shrinking civic space and using the EFCC as a tool against dissent. Similar concerns were raised during past administrations, but critics say recent actions have been more targeted and overt.
The Sokoto PDP maintained that Tambuwal’s eight-year tenure was marked by “fiscal discipline and financial prudence,” urging the anti-graft body to “live above board” and avoid becoming a political weapon.
The party also called on its members and supporters to remain law-abiding but resolute in the push for “genuine democracy and good governance” in the state and across Nigeria.
As the EFCC’s investigation continues, the case is likely to remain a flashpoint in Nigeria’s ongoing struggle to balance the fight against corruption with the protection of political freedoms.
