A Former Kaduna State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Mr Mark Jacobs, on Wednesday has criticised the Nigerian Senate for blocking Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from resuming after her six-month suspension.

He described the upper chamber’s position as a blatant show of impunity.

The Senate had on Tuesday confirmed receiving Natasha’s notice of intention to resume but insisted that her case could not be revisited until the court delivered judgment on the matter.

The Kogi Central lawmaker was suspended in March for alleged violation of chamber rules and has since challenged the action in court.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Jacobs said: “What I see is a further display of impunity gone wild. The Senate has always insisted that nobody, including the courts, should interfere with its constitutional powers to discipline members.”

Natasha’s previous attempt to retake her seat in July was unsuccessful, leaving the legal and political tussle unresolved.

Rights groups and lawyers have continued to argue that her suspension undermines legislative due process and sets a dangerous precedent for parliamentary discipline.
