The United States Mission in Nigeria has clarified that U.S. visa fees paid by Nigerian applicants remain non-refundable, stressing that the policy is consistent with international immigration standards.
In a statement released on Tuesday through its official X handle, the Embassy explained that visa fees cover the cost of processing applications, irrespective of whether approval is granted. It assured Nigerians that each case is “reviewed thoroughly and fairly.”

The Mission advised applicants to prepare applications carefully to avoid denial, revocation or cancellation. It further provided guidance, urging all nonimmigrant visa applicants to schedule interviews in their country of residence and ensure their DS-160 forms bear matching confirmation barcodes with interview appointments.

Additionally, the Embassy reminded Nigerians that effective June 9, 2025, certain categories of applicants may be affected by the Presidential Proclamation restricting entry of foreign nationals considered security threats. Those affected can still apply and attend interviews, but may remain ineligible for visa issuance.

Earlier in April 2025, the Mission had revised visa interview requirements, mandating that all applicants in Abuja and Lagos present DS-160 forms with confirmation barcodes beginning with “AA00.” Failure to meet this requirement, it warned, would lead to automatic disqualification from interview sessions.
