“As against reports online and social media, the affected building is not the UBA House, Marina, the Bank’s head office. We have ensured the safety and well-being of our staff and customers in the branch,” the lender said in a statement.
“The workers were captured in the video trying to escape through the windows,” the report added.
The cause of the fire remains unclear, but a video trending on social media shows workers struggling to exit through windows, with some attempting to jump from the storey building.
“The United Bank for Africa, UBA, branch on Lagos Island is currently on fire,” Daily Post reported, adding that “some of the bank’s staff were seen attempting to jump down from the storey building.”
The viral video, shared on X (formerly Twitter), has intensified public concern, with many calling for urgent safety reviews of commercial buildings in Lagos.
