National Assembly postpones plenary resumption by two weeks

The National Assembly has postponed the resumption of plenary sessions from September 23 to October 7.

According to a memo signed by the Clerk, Kamoru Ogunlana and sent to all members of the National Assembly, the two weeks extension will not disrupt committee activities.

The clerk urged all the Distinguished Senators, Honourable Members and the general public to take note of the adjustment.

The memo read, “I am directed by the presiding officers of both Chambers of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to inform all members of the National Assembly and the general public that the Resumption date of the National Assembly earlier scheduled for Tuesday 23rd September 2025 is postponed to Tuesday 7th October 2025. However, committee activities continue.

“All Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members are requested to take note of the new date and adjust their schedules accordingly. Any inconvenience caused by this rescheduling is deeply regretted.”

On Thursday, July 24, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced the recess, directing ad hoc and standing committees to continue their work during the break and encouraged senators to use the period to finalise pending reports and carry out oversight duties.

Similarly, the House of Representatives began its recess on Wednesday, July 23, following a motion that was moved, seconded, and unanimously adopted during plenary.

Speaker of the House, Abbas Tajudeen, advised members to take advantage of the break to engage in constituency work, attend to local issues, and monitor federal projects within their areas.

The annual recess is a routine part of the National Assembly’s legislative calendar, providing lawmakers the opportunity to balance national duties with constituency responsibilities and personal commitments.
