Google has announced a new initiative offering free access to its premium Google AI Pro subscription for university students in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe for 12 months.
The plan, which runs under the Google AI Pro Plan for Students, is designed to help young Africans build foundational skills in artificial intelligence while enhancing their learning, research, and creativity.

Eligible students aged 18 and above can access Google’s most advanced AI model, Gemini 2.5 Pro, to aid academic work, develop innovative ideas, and prepare for a technology-driven job market.

Speaking on the launch, Mr Alex Okosi, Managing Director for Google in Sub-Saharan Africa, said the initiative underscores Google’s commitment to democratising access to advanced technology.
“We are seeing a new wave of innovation in Africa, driven by the energy and ingenuity of our young people,” Okosi said. “By providing students with access to our most advanced AI tools, we want to empower them to excel in their studies and become builders and shapers of the future.”
Comprehensive AI Suite for Students
The Google AI Pro Plan comes with a suite of tools tailored for academic and creative use. Features include Guided Learning, which assists with in-depth research, summarising academic papers, debugging code, and providing step-by-step explanations of complex topics.

It also introduces Deep Research, which can compile comprehensive, cited reports from hundreds of web sources within minutes—helping students complete dissertations and long-form projects more efficiently.

For creative work, Notebook LM enables students to organise notes and link ideas, while Veo 3 allows them to transform text prompts or images into short, high-quality videos for academic presentations and projects.

Students will also enjoy 2 terabytes of cloud storage across Google Drive, Gmail, and Photos for coursework, research data, and creative. How to Activate the Offer

Okosi explained that university students in eligible higher institutions can verify their student status and activate the plan through a simple online process. While verification requires confirmation of payment information, no charges will be incurred.

The offer will be redeemable for 60 days, from October 7 to December 9, 2025, after which activation closes.

Part of a Broader Commitment

Google noted that the student offer builds on its long-standing commitment to Africa’s digital transformation through programmes such as Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and the Digital Skills for Africa initiative—both of which have empowered millions of individuals and businesses across the continent.

“This is about giving African students the skills to compete and lead globally,” Okosi added.
