The Super Eagles of Nigeria wrapped up their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with an emphatic 4–0 win over Benin Republic on Tuesday evening, yet narrowly missed out on automatic qualification after South Africa clinched top spot in Group C.
Nigeria, coming off a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Lesotho last weekend, needed both a strong performance and favourable results elsewhere to secure direct passage to the global tournament.

The Eagles got off to a flying start as Victor Osimhen struck in the third minute, before doubling the lead with a powerful header just before halftime.

Osimhen completed a brilliant hat-trick midway through the second half, showcasing his trademark finishing prowess. Frank Onyeka rounded off the scoring with a superbly struck volley to seal a dominant display in Uyo.

Despite the convincing win, the result only ensured Nigeria’s second-place finish in Group C, as South Africa’s 3–0 victory over Rwanda guaranteed their automatic qualification for the World Cup.

Head Coach Eric Chelle’s side must now wait to see if they qualify among the four best runners-up from Africa to book a place at the tournament.

Football analysts hailed Osimhen’s performance as one of his best in national colours, with fans praising the team’s fighting spirit despite the setback in group standings.

The Super Eagles will now focus on upcoming international friendlies and potential playoff fixtures as they continue their quest to return to the world’s biggest football stage.
