Supporters of former Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, operating under the Bafarawa Akida Movement, have officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Sokoto State.
The decision was taken on Wednesday after a consultative meeting of elders and leaders of the movement drawn from all the 23 local government areas of the state.
Announcing the defection, Chairman of the movement, Professor Hamza Muhammad Maishanu, said the move followed extensive internal consultations and reflected the collective position of members at all levels.
“We were formerly in the PDP, but due to certain developments and internal challenges within the party, we collectively resigned our membership,” Maishanu said. “Despite leaving the PDP, we retained our political structure across wards, local governments and the state.”
He explained that the group adopted the name Bafarawa Akida—meaning followers of the political philosophy of Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa—to sustain unity and loyalty to the ideals of its principal.
“The name represents our belief in justice, transparency, honesty and people-centred governance, values which our leader stood for while in office,” he said.
Maishanu noted that recent political realignments in Sokoto had prompted supporters of the movement to seek clarity on its political direction, leading to the convening of a statewide elders’ meeting.
“Our supporters demanded to know where we were headed politically,” he said. “We therefore invited elders from the 23 local governments, allowed free deliberations, and the decision reached was unanimous.”
According to him, the elders resolved to align with the administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu, citing what they described as its performance and respectful relationship with Bafarawa.
“There is an administration in the state that is delivering dividends of democracy and has shown respect for our principal,” Maishanu said. “Based on this, we resolved to work with the state government.”
He confirmed that the resolution translated into a formal decision to join the APC.
“In clear terms, we are moving to the APC as a political party,” he said. “We are ready to support the government in advancing its development agenda.”
Maishanu disclosed that further consultations would be held to formally communicate the decision to relevant stakeholders, adding that necessary procedures would be completed in due course.
He dismissed claims that the defection was linked to 2027 political calculations or external pressure, describing such reports as baseless.
“Our decision has nothing to do with 2027 or any hidden agenda,” he said. “It is purely based on our assessment of governance in the state.”
He also described the move as a return to the party Bafarawa helped to establish, noting that the former governor was among the founding members of the APC and chaired its Constitution Drafting Committee at inception.
“In essence, we are returning home,” Maishanu said.
He stressed that the leadership of the movement merely implemented the will of its supporters.
“This is not a decision of the leadership alone,” he added. “It is the decision of the people, and in a democratic setting, when the people decide, the leadership must follow.”
