The Special Adviser to the Sokoto State Governor on Security Matters, Col. Ahmed Abdul Usman (rtd), has described former Governor of Sokoto State and serving Senator, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, as a statesman whose leadership reshaped the developmental trajectory of the state.
In a statement issued to mark the senator’s 73rd birthday, Col. Usman said Wamakko’s decades of public service have been defined by purposeful leadership, inclusiveness and grassroots-oriented governance.
According to him, Wamakko’s tenure as governor was particularly notable for bold reforms in the education sector aimed at expanding access to learning for children from less privileged backgrounds.
He recalled that the former governor abolished school fees in public primary and secondary schools, sponsored Senior WAEC and NECO examinations, and provided free JAMB forms to students across the state — measures he said significantly increased school enrolment and retention.
The retired army officer further noted that Wamakko established key institutions, including Sokoto State University, the College of Agriculture, Wurno, and the School of Legal Studies, Wamakko, describing them as enduring investments in human capital development.
Beyond education, Usman said the administration witnessed massive infrastructural development, including the construction and rehabilitation of schools, roads and public buildings across urban and rural communities in the state.
Highlighting what he termed a historic decision, the security adviser said Wamakko abolished the “non-indigene” classification in Sokoto State, a move he noted fostered inclusiveness, reduced discrimination and strengthened social harmony among residents.
On economic empowerment, he stated that thousands of citizens across the 23 local government areas benefited from interest-free loan schemes, business support programmes and employment initiatives introduced during Wamakko’s administration.
He also referenced the introduction of special allowances for persons living with disabilities as a landmark social intervention aimed at restoring dignity and improving welfare support.
Now representing Sokoto North Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Wamakko continues to contribute to legislative debates and national discourse, Usman said, describing him as a respected voice on issues of unity, security and democratic development.
“At 73, Senator Wamakko stands as a symbol of resilience, inclusive leadership and uncommon service,” Col. Usman stated, praying for continued good health and strength for the elder statesman.
