A Labour Party governorship aspirant in Imo State, Hon. Chief Ifeanyi Thaddaus Ezeagu, has condemned the reported attacks on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Sokoto State, Manir Muhammad Dan’iya, and the African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, in Ekiti State.

Ezeagu described the incidents as a threat to Nigeria’s democratic development, warning that political differences should not be allowed to degenerate into violence, intimidation or harassment of political opponents.

In a statement, the Labour Party chieftain said every Nigerian, irrespective of political affiliation, should be able to participate in political activities and express their opinions without fear of attack. He said, “Political differences should never be an excuse for violence, intimidation or the harassment of political actors.

“Nigeria’s democracy must be built on respect for human rights, freedom of association, political tolerance and the rule of law.” Ezeagu called on the Nigeria Police Force, relevant security agencies and other authorities to conduct thorough investigations into the reported incidents and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

He also urged security agencies to strengthen protection for political stakeholders across the country, particularly as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Imo governorship aspirant further appealed to political leaders, party supporters and members to embrace peace, restraint and issue-based campaigns rather than resorting to violence.

He said, “Democracy must never become a battlefield. Political competition should be about ideas, vision and service to humanity, not violence and intimidation. “An attack on one political actor is a concern for every believer in democracy, regardless of party affiliation.”

Ezeagu expressed solidarity with Dan’iya and Sowore, wishing them and others affected by the incidents safety and strength.
