Worried about the negative effect of analogue farming on the diversification of agriculture in Nigeria,  experts and policy makers in the sector will next week converge on Umuahia,  to seek innovative technologies that would drive modern farming in the country.

They will be gathering under the Apex  Organisation:, Agricultural Society of Nigeria ( ASN) which will be staging its 59th Annual Conference and Business Meeting between October 21 to  25,2025 at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike/National Root Crops Research Institute Umudike.

The theme of the conference, ADVANCING INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES ,SKILLS AND DIGITAL ECONOMY FOR LIVELIHOOD  DIVERSIFICATION IN AGRICULTURE ” will be pivotal in seeking ways out of

Nigeria’s crude method of farming will continue to dominate the sector and retard its growth in the country.

Briefing newsmen in Umuahia, the Abia state capital,  the National President of ASN,  Prof  Jude Mbanasor explained that the society chose the theme to emphasize the urgent need for Nigeria to transit to Innovative Technologies and digital Skills to advance its agricultural potentials.

According to him, unless Nigeria abandons the current approach of farming,  its dream of agricultural diversification and food security will be a mirage because technological innovation in agriculture is the order of the day in the modern world.

He disclosed that key experts ,industry players and policy makers are expected at the event where the Minister of Stste for Agricultue and Food Security, Senator Dr Aliyu Sabi Abdulahi will be the chairman.

He said the hosts Vice Chancellor, Prof Maduebibisi Iwe, and Prof Chiedozie Egesi Executive Director, NRCRI will lead their colleagues from various universities and Research Institutes to the event while the Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti is the chief host.

Prof Mbanasor also listed Prof  Olusola Kehinde, the Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta as the Keynote Speaker, and Prof Abubakar Adamu Dabban as lead Panelist.

He disclosed that the society will at the conference confer award of excellence in Leadership on three deserving Nigerians,namely Prof Abdulraham  Shehu Vice Chancellor,Federal University of Lafia, Chief Cosmas Maduba, Hon Commissioner for Agricultue, Imo State and Dr Mrs Offing Offor, Hon. Commissioner for Agricultue, Akwa Ibom state.

Similarly,  according to Prof Mbanasor,  seven distinguished Nigerians will bag the ASN FELLOWSHIP AWARD as mark of International distinction and contributions to Agricultural development in Nigeria.

They are:  Professor Michael Ugota, Awoke,    Vice-Chancellor, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki,

Professor Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe , Vice-Chancellor, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike,  Professor Victor Emmanuel Osodeke,  Immediate Past President of ASUU,  Dr. Jude Ejikeme Obidiegwu,

Provost/Chief Executive Officer, Federal Cooperative College, Oji River Enugu State. ,  Professor Lateef Oladimeji Sanni,    Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer, Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) Ilorin.

Others are Professor SHARIFA, Aminu Ibrahim, Institute of Agricultural Research, Ahmadu Bello, iversity, Zaria, Professor Jonathan Jerimiah ATUNGWU and    Provost, Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan.
