Kenaf farmers across the country has lamented that the government has not shown enough concern, and has not given the desired enabling environment for kenaf production and businesses to thrive in the country.

They said if needed support is given to farmers and others on the value chain it is capable of saving the country billions of naira been used in importing products which can be derived from kenaf.

Kenaf is herbaceous plant with a wide range of food and non-food derivatives, which grows annually or biennially and can be cultivated in 23 states.

It is a source of an edible vegetable oil, while its seed oil is also used for cosmetics, industrial lubricants and for bio-fuel production.

Some of the states that produce kenaf in the country are; Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Taraba, Plateau, Kwara, Kaduna, Benue, Kogi, Niger, Nasarawa, Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ekiti and the FCT among others.

Kenaf is a source of cellulose fiber for the production of pulp and paper. It is a non-woody plant with a short life circle of 100-130 days. It produces pulp much faster than pine which takes about 15years to mature. It is a natural blend of short and long fibers similar to the hardwood-softwood blends used in most papers. It is therefore the most viable replacement for trees in paper production.

According to the Kenaf Development Association of Nigeria (KEDAN), the ban on the use of synthetic packaging materials for importation and exportation of agricultural produce has necessitated the use of natural fibers like kenaf in making sacks.

The association also revealed that kenaf is a very important raw material in textile industries and in construction companies where it is used in making asbestos ceiling (POP) and Kenaf oil is also another product, which is important to manufacturing industries, as the oil contains a lot of minerals and vitamins, which are essential to the man.

Finding also shows that planting Kenaf helps to alleviate global warming by absorbing carbon dioxide gases due to its rapid growth rate and the core fiber of the Kenaf plant is effective in oil spill clean-up.

Apart from this, stakeholders who spoke with The New Narrative Newspapers stated that Kenaf seed contains about 20 per cent oil, which can be used for cooking and lubricants.

The oil can also be used in the manufacturing of soap, linoleum, paints and varnishes.

They said that cattle feed in the form of a seedcake can be made from the residue after oil extraction and that kenaf leaves have medicinal properties as the plant’s potential seems unlimited.

The New Narrative investigation shows that on the average the current jute bags requirement for packaging agricultural raw materials for export in the country is estimated at 28 million.

Wasiu Fagbohun, National Secretary of KEDAN said he does not think the government of Nigeria is ready for the revolution of kenaf now because farmers are getting tired of it.

He said various researches have been done on it, but all have been on the shelf for more than 25 years that government is not having interest in it.

He said that the association has tried on its own when government is not supporting and has engaged NNPC in demonstrating how kenaf powder can be used for cleaning up of the oil spillage.

“Our association, Kenaf Development Association of Nigeria (KEDAN) we have tried to on our own when government is not supporting we have engaged NNPC in demonstrating usage of kenaf powder for cleaning up of the oil spillage and even the top management said this is what they import, that this is what they use but they import it into the country every time,” he said.

He added that the members have been planting in almost all Southwest states, up to the North and some parts of the East because kenaf grows very well in more than 23 states in Nigeria and within 120 days, the plant is ready for harvest. It is only in swampy areas that it doesn’t grow well.

Speaking further he said that there was a time the association brought an international investor to the country but bottlenecks made the man ran back to the UK.

“We brought an international investor to this country, but bottle necks made the man ran back to the UK and he said he would not mind going to another West African country where the bottleneck is mild; that is our problem. We have even told our farmers to stop planting because when you plant and harvest, no one to buy. Marketing has been the main problem,” he added.

Also, Lanre Olateru-Olugbeyi, Chairman Board of Trustees Kenaf Development Association (KEDAN) said that the country is doing nothing presently because there is no enabling environment for businesses along that value chain to thrive.

“There is a powder that is been made out of kenaf which is an absorber, they use it to clean oil spillage, Nigeria is still importing that product, they are yet to buy any from local, Nigeria is still importing jute they are yet to buy from local. So Nigeria is doing nothing, we are hearing they spend money we don’t know where they spend the money. We have over 5000 members,”

He said that members of the association cannot continue to produce because government is not creating enabling environment.

“We cannot continue to produce because we produce jute from it, the government is not creating an enabling environment we are not asking them for a dime, all the research we have done is through our own means; we are producing powered from it using it as an absorber, beside using it as an absorber to clean oil spillage, they can also use it to manufacture papers all of these things are imported and we are all paying for it.

“Nigeria uses a lot of paper daily, also in the area of oil spillage I know it is going to cost a lot of billions to clean it up, but they are importing them. Embracing kenaf production will create nothing less than two million jobs in a year,” he added.

He further stated that government need to wake up and see how their people will get jobs and that enabling environment must be created for businesses to thrive.

However, Apostle Kunle Amosu, National Secretary Kenaf Producers, Processors and Marketers Association of Nigeria (KEPPMAN), said that the association is doing everything to make sure that they start production at a commercial level that before now it was been grown in the North for vegetable as they eat the leaf.

He said that in the 60s the Western regional government embraced kenaf and they were producing about 33 per cent of jute bags the country needed at that time in Badagry and the rest are been imported.

Amosu said that the association is getting attention now from the Federal Government through the Raw Material Research and Development Council, that the council gave some farmers seeds last year and has given another seed this year.

“We have faced many challenges, the only thing we are been seeing is seed it does not end when you give people seed. For instance, last year we were given 400kg of seed. We have not been doing mechanise yet, we need machinery to go mechanized because we still depend on doing it manually but with that we will not get anywhere.

“In the area of jute bags we are doing so much. There is an investor in Kaduna that has start to manufacture jute bag and by our learning we know that Nigeria need for jute bags is  10 million pieces, so it is a tall order from us to meet the demand. The factory that is on now can only produce two million.

“We don’t have enough fibre because we have been planting manually and we are bucking up against next year to partake in the Anchors Borrowers Fund from the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) so that we can get enough funds to do it commercially,” he added.
