Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, has signed the ₦758.7 billion 2026 Appropriation Bill into law, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to deepen development and expand economic opportunities across the state.
Tagged the “Budget of Socio-Economic Expansion,” the 2026 fiscal plan is aimed at driving sustainable growth, strengthening critical infrastructure, and improving the quality of life of citizens.
Speaking after assenting to the bill, Governor Aliyu lauded the Sokoto State House of Assembly for the speedy and thorough passage of the budget. He assured that implementation would begin immediately to ensure prompt execution of government programmes and projects.
A breakdown of the budget shows strong focus on people-oriented sectors. The economic sector received 41 per cent, the social sector 37 per cent, while the health sector was allocated 16 per cent, amounting to ₦122.73 billion.
Major health interventions include the completion of the Sokoto State University Teaching Hospital, Kasarawa, the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, and the upgrade of general hospitals in Binji, Tambuwal, and Sabon Birni. The budget also provides for the purchase of 21 ambulances to enhance emergency healthcare delivery.
The education sector was allocated ₦115.95 billion to improve teaching and learning conditions, rehabilitate schools, and expand infrastructure at tertiary institutions. Agriculture received ₦18.74 billion, targeted at boosting food production and ensuring food security.
Governor Aliyu noted that the 2026 budget is largely capital-driven, with 72 per cent devoted to capital expenditure and 28 per cent to recurrent expenditure, in line with International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank recommendations.
He added that projects executed so far by his administration were financed without borrowing, keeping Sokoto State free from debt.
In his remarks, the Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Hon. Tukur Bala Bodinga, described the budget as people-centred and capable of accelerating socio-economic development. He assured that the legislature would exercise effective oversight to ensure judicious implementation.
With the assent of the Governor, the Sokoto State Government has once again underscored its commitment to transparency, fiscal discipline, and sustainable development, with the 2026 budget expected to stimulate economic growth and improve the welfare of residents.
