In a bold move to promote healing, dignity, and self-reliance among vulnerable women, the Sokoto State Government has concluded a five-day intensive livelihood skills training for 40 survivors of Vesico-Vaginal Fistula (VVF) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The initiative, organized by the Ministry for Women and Children’s Affairs in partnership with the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning and supported by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), ended with a graduation ceremony held on Alhaji, , at the Maryam Abacha Women and Children Hospital, Sokoto.

The programme was designed to equip the participants with practical entrepreneurial skills to foster financial independence, social reintegration, and long-term resilience.

Addressing the beneficiaries, the Commissioner for Women and Children’s Affairs, Hajiya Hadiza Shagari, hailed the courage of the women in overcoming trauma and health challenges. She described the training as a testament to the state government’s commitment to women’s empowerment, gender inclusion, and community rehabilitation.

“These young women have shown extraordinary strength. This training is not just about skills; it’s about restoring hope, reclaiming dignity, and paving a new path toward economic self-sufficiency,” Shagari said.

In a similar vein, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, represented at the event by the permanent secretary in the ministry, Hajia Maryam Barade Wamakko, described the initiative as a significant milestone in the state’s human development agenda.

He reaffirmed the government’s resolve to support survivors of violence and reproductive health complications through structured interventions.

Meanwhile, UNFPA’s support was instrumental in the programme’s success. The agency not only provided technical backing for the training but also donated 100 Caesarean Section packs and 100 Mama Kits for distribution to affected women.

Speaking on behalf of the organization, Alhaji Musa Wamakko urged the beneficiaries to use their starter kits responsibly and avoid selling the items.

All the 40 participants received starter packs and seed grants to help launch small-scale businesses, enabling them to become financially self-reliant and role models within their communities.

The event drew attendance from top government functionaries, development partners, health professionals, and media representatives, all commending the initiative as a step forward in the fight against GBV and maternal health issues in Sokoto State.
