Mr. OsitaAboloma, the Director-General of Standards Organisation of Nigeria has linked the success of the standardisation body in seizures of substandard products to the effectiveness of the Act it derives its power from. He described the SON Act as a revolutionary law, saying that the agency is readily disposed to deliver on its mandate in the bid to rid the consumer market of unwholesome products.

Aboloma spoke during a stakeholders’ sensitisation workshop on the SON Act in Yola, Adamawa State. He  said, “The big haul of seizures which the agency made recently is testimonial that we mean business by harnessing, to the fullest, the enormous powers which the Act has accorded us.”

He added  that within the last few months, SON had confiscated fake and substandard products worth billions of naira across the country and embarked on arraignment and trial at the various courts of some of the suspects linked with the impounded goods.

He said, “We are not resting on our oars. We therefore appeal to all to be aware of the Act, comply with its provisions particularly areas dealing with how operators should do the right thing for their businesses to grow.”

The DG explained that the work of standardisation was to grow the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, promote agro-allied sector as well as ensure industrial and economic development.

He said, “We need to use the instrumentality of SON Act to attain economic development. We are spreading our tentacles to the states and geo-political zones. Product counterfeiters have no place to hibernate. With the reinvigorated monitoring and enforcement strategies we are putting in place, our dragnet will get economic saboteurs anywhere, anytime.”

Ostensibly giving an insight to the theme of the workshop which was, ‘SON Act 2015: Catalyst for economic development’,  he explained that  it was germane and quite in tune with the current efforts by the Federal Government to turn around the nation’s economy.

“We decided to conduct nationwide stakeholders’ sensitisation workshops on the Act not only in order to enlighten people about the provisions of the Act but also to strengthen stakeholders’ engagement and collaborations.

“The positive outcomes and impact of the sensitisation exercise in places where it has been conducted so far have been encouraging.”
