A wave of grief has swept over the Labinkulu community in the Moniya area of Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State following the brutal murder of 24-year-old Abass Olalere by a 12-man gang on Saturday night. The attack, which occurred around 9:48 pm, has left residents in shock and fear.

According to eyewitness accounts, the gang forcefully entered Olalere’s home and slaughtered him in front of his wife, Omolayo, and their three-month-old son. Omolayo recounted the horrifying incident to newsmen, stating that the attackers broke through their doors and windows after they had rushed inside to hide.

“We were together outside around 9:48 pm when they suddenly invaded our house. I don’t know them, and my late husband had no misunderstanding with anybody before he died,” she said.

The gang, wielding various weapons including daggers, axes, knives, broken bottles, and cutlasses, commanded Olalere to lie down on a table in the parlour. Omolayo described how they ruthlessly attacked him with these weapons, using charms to ensure he did not survive. Three of the assailants had their faces covered with masks.

Despite rushing Olalere to Cureland Hospital in Moniya and subsequent referrals, he succumbed to his injuries. The tragic event has been reported to the Divisional Police Station in Moniya.

Community in Shock

When Vanguard visited the area, the community was in a state of tension, with groups of residents discussing the tragic event. The father of the deceased, Jelili Olalere, expressed his bewilderment and sorrow, describing his son as a quiet person who had no known conflicts.

“I was shocked because my son is a quiet person. I don’t know what could have prompted those guys to invade my house and destroy many things before killing him,” he lamented.

Jelili detailed the extent of the destruction, mentioning broken doors, windows, and damaged Plasma televisions. He confirmed that the matter has been reported to the police.

Police Response

Efforts to contact the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, for comments have been unsuccessful as his phone number was unreachable.

The corpse of Abass Olalere has been deposited at the morgue in Adeoyo Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, as the community mourns the loss of a young life to senseless violence.

As investigations continue, the Labinkulu community remains gripped by fear and grief, hoping for justice for the heinous crime committed against one of their own.
