The Department of Biochemistry in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and the Faculty of Science organised an ex-augural lecture (blended) in honour of Prof. Olubunmi Abiola Magbagbeola, a renowned professor of biochemistry on Thursday, April 29, 2021.

Her Lecture titled: “Reminiscence of a Biochemist and a Mother from Analog to Digital Era in the University of Lagos, 1979 – 2021”, Prof. Magbagbeola reflected on her sojourn in the University system from Course Adviser to the Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences. She spoke about her service to the College and the University and gave some words of advice as well as suggestions on the way things could be done better both at the College and the University.

The Provost, College of Medicine, UNILAG, Prof. David Adewale Oke, in an address at the event,  extolled the virtues of Prof. Magbagbeola, calling her a seasoned administrator, researcher of international repute, sound scholar, and a very dependable mother and wife.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin T. Ogundipe, FAS, praised Prof. Magbagbeola for finishing strong, expressing confidence in the everlasting nature of her legacy of selfless service.

Among those present was an ex-student of Prof and current Chairman of the UNILAG Alumni Association, Lagos branch, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu. He reminisced on how she had supported him when he had embarked on the rehabilitation the Medical Student Access Road as the COMPSSA President some years ago.

Popularly called “Prof. Magba” by her ex-students, Prof. Magbagbeola will retire from active service on May 2, 2021. She started her career in the academia in 1976 as a graduate assistant/demonstrator at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and became a full Professor at the University of Lagos in 2001.
