Sokoto: Sokoto Students Forum Urge State ASUU To End Solidarity Strike

Sokoto State Students Leaders Forum has appealed to the leadership and of Academic Staff Union of University, Sokoto State University to as a matter of urgency end their solidarity strike with their parent body.

The forum also appealed to the leadership of the Union at the national level to revisit their strategy and weigh the import of their decision on the youth and future of this country.

Speaking while addressing newsmen at the NUJ press centre, Sokoto, the President of the association, Alkasim Isah Garba, also called on the state government to use every means necessary to end this industrial action for good.

According to the statement, “we have been following with keen interest and concern, the industrial action declared by ASUU and it’s attendant impact on education, economy, security and other sectors negatively affected by the strike action.

“We understand that the strike is to push the Federal government to implement the ASUU/FG 2009 renegotiated agreement and other issues thereabouts.

“As a student’s centered body, we stand with ASUU for standing up to demand for the implementation of the agreement it entered with government.

“We also acknowledge the sacrifices of the union and it’s commitment to saving the Nation’s education sector from total collapse. There is no doubt about the fact that the Federal government is not committed to the implementation of that agreement and the the legitimate demands of ASUU members therein”

The students forum further emphasized that the state governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has made several pronouncements on why the Sokoto State University Chapter of the Union should see reason and return to back to classes as his government has no dispute with ASUU.

He said despite the ongoing strike and base on information made available to the forum, the state government has approved salaries and allowances for all categories of workers in the state tertiary institutions including the state University.

The forum however disclosed that the state chapter of ASUU has no moral justification to continue with the strike embarked upon by the national body of the Union.
