Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Government in Exile, has been jailed by a District Court in Finland.

Ekpa was sentenced to six years in prison for inciting terrorism and participating in the activities of a terrorist group.

According to the court, Ekpa exploited his extensive following on social media between August 2021 and November 2024 to promote violence and encourage unrest in the Southeast.

“The accused was an influential member of a separatist movement which established armed groups with the aim of securing Biafra’s independence through force,” the verdict stated.

Recall that Ekpa was arrested by Finnish authorities on 21 November 2024, following an investigation by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) into allegations of inciting terrorism and promoting violence through social media, activity that was believed to have contributed to unrest in southeastern Nigeria.
