President Bola Tinubu has expressed grief over the tragic death of Ms Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu, a news anchor with Arise News Television, who was killed during a robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja.
In a statement on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the management and staff of Arise News, and the wider Nigerian media community.

“Ms Maduagwu was a promising professional journalist whose life was cut short in a cruel and condemnable manner,” Tinubu said.

The President directed security agencies to conduct a swift and thorough investigation into the incident and ensure the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted without delay.

While commiserating with the bereaved family, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding citizens, stressing that measures to combat crime in all its forms would continue to be strengthened.

The anchor’s death has sparked emotions in the country, especially in the media community.

Earlier, the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) condemned the tragic death of Somtochukwu in a statement signed by the guild’s president, Eze Anaba and Onuoha Ukeh, NGE General Secretary, on Tuesday.

“The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) is saddened by the death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a talented news anchor and reporter with Arise News, who lost her life in a senseless armed robbery incident at her Katampe, Abuja residence,” the NGE said.

The NGE demanded action from the government to address the root causes of insecurity and take measures to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.
