In a renewed push to combat cervical cancer and promote public health, youths from across Sokoto State have committed to championing the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign at the grassroots level.
This commitment followed a one-day capacity-building workshop held on Wednesday at Sokoto Guest Inn, organized by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in partnership with the Government of Canada.
The initiative aims to boost the uptake of the HPV vaccine among adolescent girls and young women in Sokoto, reducing the risks of cervical and genital cancers associated with the virus.
One of the participants, Rosemary Joseph, a 200-level medical student at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, expressed her determination to drive awareness in her community.
“We’ve been trained to educate people about the HPV vaccine and its role in preventing cervical cancer,” she said. “Our goal is to reach as many girls as possible and ensure they get vaccinated.”
As part of the effort, 15 young volunteers—three from each of five selected local government areas—have been appointed as HPV vaccine ambassadors. They will collaborate with traditional and religious leaders, health workers, and educators to advocate for the vaccine in their communities.
Ali Dalhatu, a volunteer from Wamakko Local Government, stressed the importance of trust and community engagement in health campaigns.
“As insiders, we know how best to engage our people. We’ll use local platforms—mosques, town criers, and schools—to dispel myths and encourage acceptance,” he said.
Another participant, Mujahid Mustafa Muhammad, a psychiatry student and UNICEF volunteer, expressed gratitude for the opportunity. “This training has opened our eyes to the importance of prevention. We appreciate UNICEF and the Canadian government for empowering us to make a difference,” he noted.
The workshop signals the beginning of a state-wide awareness campaign, as Sokoto intensifies efforts to protect future generations from vaccine-preventable diseases.
