Tragedy struck the family of Senator Abba Moro, the Senate Minority Leader representing Benue South, as he lost his son, Victor Moro, and grandson, Abba Moro Jr, within a span of 48 hours.

Peter, who had recently completed his studies in Turkey, reportedly returned to Nigeria to begin his National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, programme.

Sadly, he died in a fatal motor accident along the Mararaba axis in Nasarawa state, just 24 hours after the burial of his father’s grandson.

Condoling Moro, the Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, in a statement on Tuesday in Makurdi by Mr Tersoo Kula, Chief Press Secretary to the governor.

Alia described the deaths of the lawmaker’s sons within 24 hours of each other, as painful and devastating, saying “anyone who believes in humanity will be touched by the double tragedy”.

He urged the lawmaker, his family, the people of Benue South, and the entire state to accept what had happened as the will of God, who gives and takes away life.

Similarly, Former President of the Senate and Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death.

In a condolence message to Senator Moro on Tuesday, Senator Mark said, “I received the heartbreaking news with great shock and profound sadness.

“This devastating incident is a painful reminder of the fragility of life, and our hearts go out to you and the entire family at this most difficult time.

“The loss of a child is one of life’s heaviest blows, and I can only imagine the depth of grief that this tragedy has brought upon your family. I stand in solidarity with you as you mourn your beloved son.

“I pray that God, in His infinite mercy, will grant you and your family the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

“I also pray for the peaceful repose of Peter’s soul and ask that the Almighty comforts the bereaved family, offering you strength, hope, and consolation in this dark hour.”

On his part, the immediate past Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, in a message signed by his media aide, Terver Akase consoled the lawmaker, describing the incident as a heartbreaking double tragedy that words can hardly express.

He noted that the pain of losing two family members in such quick succession was beyond comprehension.

Ortom said “that the death of Victor Moro, a young man full of promise who had just completed his studies in Turkey and returned home to serve his country under the National Youth Service Corps, only for his life to be cut short in a fatal motor accident is especially devastating.”

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said, “To lose a grandson, and then, only days later, a son, is a pain no family should ever have to bear.

“This double bereavement is a deeply difficult moment for the Senate Minority Leader, Distinguished Senator Abba Moro, his wife, and their family.

“Toyin and I extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences, and pray that the Almighty will strengthen them, comfort them, and surround them with His peace through this very dark season.”
