The Provost of Abia State College of Education (Technical), Arochukwu Dr Philips Nto yesterday told the Senate Committee on Education that the best way to immortalize the late foremost educationist and nationalist, Dr Alvan Ikoku was for the Federal Government to take over ASCETA.
Dr. Nto who was making his presentation at a Public Hearing on a bill sponsored by Senator Mao Ohuabunwa for the establishment of a Federal College of Education (Technical), in Arochukwu noted that embossing the picture of Ikoku in the Nigerian Currency was not enough honour for a man who did so much for Nigeria.
The Provost who spoke extempore to the admiration of the Senators also gave other reasons why the Governing Council, Management, Staff and Students of ASCETA were in support of the bill.
He said the fact that the College was already functional haven been sited at the ground of Agrey Memorial College, founded by late Dr Alvan Ikoku, recommended it for a smooth take over by the Federal Government.
Dr. Nto also argued that there was no Federal presence in the entire area apart from the Prison and Police Stations and wondered why a peaceful people like Arochukwu LGA would be rewarded with Institutions associated with lawbreakers.
He further submitted that the present location of ASCETA was equidistance to three states, namely, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Ebonyi States, and therefore accessible to students from those States, including Abia.
Amidst applause from those present at the Public Hearing, including Distinguished Senators, Dr Nto was convinced that the College in Arochukwu will also help enhance National Unity and cohesion as it would attract students from all over the Country.
He said the takeover will also assist lessen the financial burden of Abia State government which is reeling under a heavy wage bill and other economic challenges.
He implored the Senate to pass the bill into law as part of efforts to enhance the acquisition of quality technical education by Nigerian youths.
Dr. Nto commended the sponsor of the bill, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa for his foresight, cerebral fecundity, political sagacity and legislative prowess, and assured him of the support of the people of Abia North Senatorial Zone in his re-election bid.
