Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has expressed concern over the rising cases of boat mishaps in recent times in several communities of the state, describing them as devastating and heartbreaking.

The governor’s spokesman, Bologi Ibrahim, in a statement issued to newsmen in Minna, said Bago noted that the negative effects of boat mishaps could be minimised if waterway travellers adhere strictly to safety regulation

The governor also stated that the incessant boat mishaps are mostly caused by human factors, such as overloading and a refusal to use life jackets, among others.

While sympathising with the Borgu local council over the unfortunate incident, he extended his condolences to the families of the victims. The governor prayed that Allah repose the souls of the deceased, grant a quick recovery to those injured, and comfort all who are experiencing profound grief and sorrow as a result of the mishap.

He applauded the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), the National Inland Waterways Authority, local divers, and community volunteers who immediately mobilised themselves for rescue operations.
