The border conflict between Isu Community in Abia State and Ukwa Community in Cross River took a tragic turn over the weekend as Mrs. Blessing Kalu Elem lost her life in a brutal raid, allegedly orchestrated by invaders from the neighboring Ukwa. The assault left several others injured, with an unspecified number still missing as a result of the attacks that occurred on Friday and Saturday.
Amara Kalu, the President General of Isu Community, recounted the harrowing events, revealing that the assaults caught them off guard, with victims sustaining injuries and some fatalities during the raids. The conflict, stemming from disputes over ancestral land aggravated by the discovery of limestone, has led to over 50 casualties since it escalated in 2018.
Displaced villagers, now living in Internally Displaced Persons camps, endure harsh conditions, and efforts to resolve the crisis have been met with challenges. Kalu appealed for urgent government intervention, urging the delineation of boundaries by the National Boundary Commission and the establishment of a military or police base to ensure peace.
In response, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, represented by his Deputy Ikechukwu Emetu, visited the affected community, pledging support for the victims and condemning the attacks. Otti assured the community of measures to enhance security and infrastructure in the area, promising medical assistance for the wounded and compensation for the affected families. The Governor also expressed condolences to the bereaved and emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and properties of its citizens.
The Commissioner of Police in Abia State, CP Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, joined the Governor during the visit, underlining the security agencies’ resolve to address the situation and maintain peace in the region. The tragedy underscores the urgent need for a lasting solution to the border dispute to prevent further loss of life and restore stability to the affected communities.
