Borno State Governor, , Professor Babagana Umara Zulum Thursday in Abuja participated in the virtual briefing on steep deterioration of humanitarian situation in the North East.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management And Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Farouq, UN Resident and Humanitarian Cordinator in Nigeria , Mr, Edward Kallon, Heads of other UN Partners and Development Representatives of the INGOs were in attendamce.
The Humanitarian partners and development agencies meeting which was aimed at raising profilef or Nigerian Emergencies and also to mobilize funds for the north east humanitarian activities had stakeholders from th 6 states of the north east who provided updates of their different perspectives at the meeting.
The UN Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Edward Kallon meeting also briefed the donors and media on the vulnerable people’s needs and ongoing humanitarian need responses in the North East.
He said the people in need of humanitarian support rose from 7.1 million people in 2019 to 7.9 million at the beginning of 2020.
According to him, the UN Database, the humanitarian response plan funding stood atl low level in 2020 where out o the requirement of $1.08 billion, only $316.9 million have so far been received.
He further noted at the meeting that UN OCHA coordinates the global emergency response to save lives and protect people in humanitarian crises. advocates for effective and principled humanitarian action by all, for all.
Similarly, he added that OCHA also coordinates global humanitarian funding appeals and manages global and country-specific humanitarian response funds where the United Nations Office For Cordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) have been working in support of Nigerian government to scale up responses.
