The Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State has called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intensify efforts in controlling the spread of cholera, particularly in schools.

In a statement on Friday, the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Mrs. Olubunmi Odesanya, emphasized the urgent need for the state government to provide an emergency response to the epidemic, which she described as spiraling out of control.

“Labour Party in Lagos State is calling to question the responsiveness of the state government to the current cholera epidemic. The scourge is fast spiraling,” Odesanya said. “LP Lagos State is upset that the Babajide Sanwo-Olu government has not accorded the problem the kind of response it should. So far, the government has not done more than a mere issuance of advisory.”

Odesanya stressed the importance of identifying and addressing the root causes of the disease to prevent further spread. “Time for action is now,” she asserted, noting the alarming statistics of over 40 reported deaths and approximately 400 infections.

She criticized the state government’s handling of the crisis, suggesting that more proactive measures are needed beyond advisories. “To us in the Labour Party, it seems the state government does not appreciate the threats posed by the continued spread of the disease. Rather than tackle this very serious matter frontally by activating the health systems to tame the scourge, the best the Sanwo-Olu-led government has been able to do is issue an ineffectual advisory,” Odesanya lamented.

The LP spokesperson urged the government to ensure the provision of clean and potable water to residents and to maintain a clean and safe environment. She highlighted the increased risk as children returned to school after the festivities, expressing concern for their safety.

“The fear of our hapless children contracting cholera is there,” she noted, while also extending condolences to families who have lost loved ones to the epidemic and wishing a full recovery to those currently affected.

Odesanya also called on residents to adhere to good health and sanitary precautions to stay safe.
