The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has urged Nigerian Army commanders to embrace innovation and creativity to strengthen combat readiness.
Speaking at a one-day seminar for junior and middle-level officers at the 8 Division Headquarters in Sokoto on Thursday, Lt. Gen. Oluyede reaffirmed the military’s commitment to fostering an environment where officers can develop innovative strategies for more effective operations.
The seminar, themed “Enhancing Operational Effectiveness through Nigeria Army Lessons Learned Process/Feedback Mechanism,” aims to refine the army’s strategic approach by encouraging efficiency and adaptability in its operations.
“This seminar is essential for consolidating our successes and ensuring that the Nigerian Army remains well-prepared to operate in complex and evolving environments,” Oluyede stated.
He emphasized the importance of learning from past experiences, enhancing officers’ capabilities, and ensuring they remain combat-ready while minimizing operational errors, casualties, and costs. He also highlighted the significance of integrating both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches in military engagements.
Represented by the Chief of Transformation and Innovation, Maj. Gen. Olusegun Samson Abai, the COAS commended the leadership of the 8 Division Headquarters, under Maj. Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, for its dedication to combating insecurity in the Northwest.
In his welcome address, Brig. Gen. Olayinka Are, Deputy Director of Training and Examination Analysis at the Army Headquarters, emphasized that the seminar was designed to enhance officers’ ability to extract, analyze, and apply lessons from past operations.
“This initiative is crucial for improving operational effectiveness, particularly in the Northwest, aligning with the COAS’s vision of transforming the Nigerian Army through sound administration and leadership,” he noted.
Brig. Gen. Are further stressed that professionalism, effective leadership, and continuous training are fundamental to the army’s efficiency.
“The soldier is the army. No army is better than its soldiers. Training and developing our personnel remain top priorities,” he added.
The seminar provides a platform for officers to expand their knowledge, refine operational strategies, and contribute to the Nigerian Army’s mission of safeguarding national security.
