Covenant University Takes Big Leap in World Rankings.

Covenant’s vision of becoming one of the top 10 universities in the world by the year 2022 has received a fillip, with the institution taking a giant leap from her former 601-800 ranking to 401-500 in the 2020 rankings recently released by the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.

For the fourth year in a row, the University of Oxford led the rankings in first place, while the University of Cambridge dropped to third. The California Institute of Technology rose three places to second, while Stanford, Yale, Harvard and Imperial College of London all appeared in the top 10.

The new rankings showed that Covenant remained No. 1 in Nigeria, followed by the University of Ibadan (ranked in the 501-600 range), the University of Lagos (801-1000), which made her debut in the rankings, followed by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Also, Covenant rose from her former 6th position to 4th in the African Rankings, and she remained No. 1 in West Africa.

According to the report on the new ranking, Covenant University had 8,768 full-time students, the number of students per staff was ratio 15: 7, female: male ratio was 43:57, international students is zero percent, teaching was 27.2, research was 14.7, industry income was 43.8 while her international outlook was 26.2.

With the new development, Covenant has risen in the ranking of world universities by a 35.57% margin. Significantly, the University also emerged No. 1 in Teaching, Research, Citation, and Industry Income but No. 3 in International Outlook.

The Chancellor and Chairman, Board of Regents, Dr. David O. Oyedepo, in his reaction to the new rankings, gave the glory to God and urged faculty and staff to rededicate their efforts as Covenant was not yet near her destination. “The idea of a university started in Africa over 500 years ago. There were thousands of universities before Covenant but grace has brought us to where we are. We celebrate Jesus who makes these wonderful things happen,” enthused the Chancellor.

While he urged faculty members to be committed to training Covenant students, who would turn to treasure and change the story of Nigeria for the better, Dr. Oyedepo stated that the strongest point of the University should be the quality of her graduates.

Also, the Vice-Chancellor, Covenant, Professor AAA. Atayero, during whose administration the University had recorded unprecedented milestones, gave appreciation to God for the great things He continues to do in the life of His University. He commended members of faculty for their commitment to the University’s vision, while encouraging them to rededicate their efforts towards achieving the ultimate goal.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2020 included almost 1,400 universities across 92 countries, standing as the largest and most diverse university rankings ever to date. The table was based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

The only university ranking to be independently audited by professional services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, and trusted worldwide by students, teachers, governments and industry experts, this year’s league table provides great insight into the shifting balance of power in global higher education.
