On Saturday, August 10, 2024, a driver reportedly under the influence of alcohol struck two pedestrians near the Mayfair Garden in the Epe area of Lagos State, causing severe injuries. The incident occurred around 6:30 am and involved a Toyota Camry with license plate YAB 133 JY and a commercial LT Bus with license plate SMK 84 YB.

According to Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the driver lost control of the vehicle while speeding, hitting the pedestrians as they crossed the Lekki-Epe Expressway with their luggage. After hitting the pedestrians, the driver continued speeding and crashed into a commercial bus that was dropping off passengers at a nearby bus stop.

LASTMA operatives were quick to respond, rescuing the injured pedestrians, who sustained severe fractures to their legs and arms. They were transported to Akodo General Hospital for treatment. The driver of the Toyota Camry, along with two other occupants, was arrested by LASTMA and handed over to the police at Elemoro Police Station.

LASTMA also cleared the vehicles from the expressway to ensure traffic flow towards Epe. Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, extended sympathies to the victims and stressed the importance of road safety, urging all drivers to avoid driving under the influence.
