The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has kicked against offering money or any form of inducement to police officers while on duty.
Warning residents against the act in a terse statement on Command’s X handle, the FCT police insisted that inducing an officer is a criminal act.
It emphasised that officers must be allowed to carry out their responsibilities diligently and without interference.
The command further urged members of the public to promptly report any unprofessional conduct by officers to the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) on 08107314192.
The statement reads: “It is unlawful to give our officers money or any form of inducement while they are performing their duty. Let them discharge their responsibilities diligently, without interference.
“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to serving you with integrity. Your cooperation is vital,together, we can build a safer society.
“If you witness any unprofessional act by our officers, please report immediately via our CRU – 08107314192 . FCT POLICE emergency :08032003913.”
Cases of bribery within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) are a persistent issue, documented in reports by bodies like the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), which show police officers are frequently recipients of bribes.
These actions range from petty extortion to influencing investigations and can occur at all levels, undermining public trust and access to justice. Despite the NPF’s efforts to combat corruption, including special units and response units, public complaints persist and the problem remains prevalent.
