The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade that had been scheduled to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
The FG made its decision public in a statement signed by Segun Imohiosen, Director, Information & Public Relations, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, on Monday.
Although the reason for the decision was not stated, Imohiosen maintained that the cancellation is in no way a diminishment of the significance of this milestone anniversary.
Imohiosen said, “The Federal Government wishes to announce the cancellation of the Independence Anniversary parade, previously scheduled to mark the 65th Independence on Wednesday, 1st October.
“Accordingly, all other programmes slated for the Independence Anniversary will remain in effect. The Government deeply regrets any inconvenience caused by this cancellation.
“The Federal Government appreciates the understanding, support and cooperation of all Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community, and invited guests, and urges Nigerians to support the reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR in making Nigeria a greater nation.”
Meanwhile, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Monday, declared Wednesday, October 1, as a public holiday.
In a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, the minister congratulated Nigerians on the “historic milestone”.
He urged citizens to continue upholding patriotism, unity, and resilience, which he said have kept the nation together since its independence in 1960.
The minister also called on Nigerians to keep faith in President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, which he said is focused on national rebirth, economic growth, and shared prosperity.
Tunji-Ojo stated that with collective effort, Nigeria would continue to advance in peace, progress, and development.
