The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has said the European Union, Managing Conflict in the North Nigeria played a vital role in seeing that the bill on Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) was sponsored and passed into law at the Yobe State House of Assembly.
Projector Coordinator of FIDA, Barrister Fati Makintami, disclosed that, the increasing rape cases and other criminal offences in the state; has become bizarre hence, the need for more budget allocation to Police, Judiciary and the Sexual Assault Centre Referral Centre for quick dispensation of justice.
Records made available to news men indicate that Yobe state recorded high increase of rape cases in 2020, especially among the minors compare to the previous years.
According to Sambo Abdulkadir, the State Team Leader of the MCN in Yobe State, despite the outcry over the rising cases of rape, there seems to be no end to the menace as cases are on the increase weekly.
He explains there is a need for holistic approach, sensitization and support from all stakeholders so as to curb the menace. Abdulkadir further laments that, the VAPP Law when assented to by the Governor will help in reducing the rape crimes.
The spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force ASP Dungus Abdulmalik had earlier reported that rape is the second highly reported crime in the state, after homicide.
