On Saturday, a fire outbreak at Terminal ‘C’ of the Tin-Can Island Port, operated by Port and Cargo Handling Company in Apapa, Lagos, led to a halt in container operations at the terminal. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, but the incident impacted crucial equipment in the Information Communication Technology (ICT) department.

As of the time of filing this report, engineers were actively working to restore the system, aiming to normalize operations at the terminal. The fire, originating from the ICT department, did not result in any loss of data, according to a statement signed by Mr. Olumuyiwa Akande, the Group Head of Corporate Communications for the Sifax Group, owners of Terminal ‘C.’

The statement reassured stakeholders that despite the unfortunate incident, there was an excellent backup plan in place to safeguard data. The Sifax Group is collaborating with relevant agencies to ensure the restoration of normal port operations by Monday, February 26, 2024.

The statement from Mr. Akande reads, “While minimal disruption to our services is expected, we are currently working with all relevant agencies, especially the Nigerian Customs Service, Tin-Can Island Command, to restore normal port operation latest by Monday, February 26, 2024. We are using this opportunity to assure all our stakeholders, including clearing agents, consignees, and other port users that we have activated our approved business continuity plan to keep our operations running while we work assiduously to meet the scheduled date of resuming normal port operations.”
