A four-storey building has collapsed on Lagos Island, trapping an unknown number of individuals under the debris. The incident occurred near the Oba of Lagos’ palace at Iga Iduganran.

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, confirmed the collapse on his X account. So far, eight people have been rescued from the rubble by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), with rescue operations ongoing to retrieve at least two more individuals still trapped.

Omotosho’s statement read: “A four-storey building has collapsed at Iga Iduganran, Lagos Island. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency officials have rescued eight people from the rubble. They are battling to retrieve two others from the rubble. The structure had been marked by LASBCA for evacuation.”

This tragic incident comes just days after a mosque collapse in the Papa Ajao area of Lagos State, which claimed the lives of an 11-year-old girl and three others when an excavator accidentally struck the building.

The recent spate of building collapses has prompted renewed scrutiny and criticism of construction standards and regulatory enforcement in Lagos. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has previously condemned developers over the persistent issue of building collapses, emphasizing the need for stricter adherence to safety regulations.

Rescue efforts continue as emergency responders work tirelessly to save those still trapped and to prevent further tragedies.
