Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese delivered a stark warning about Nigeria’s current security crisis, attributing it to a lack of investment in educating the nation’s youth. Speaking at the 42nd Actualisation four-day conference of Rotary International, District 9110 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Bishop Kukah emphasized the critical role of education in combating the rising tide of banditry and terrorism.
Highlighting the consequences of neglecting education, Bishop Kukah pointed out that millions of Nigerian children are currently out of school, with many living on the streets and vulnerable to exploitation by criminal elements. He expressed concern that without urgent intervention, the situation could worsen, leading to further insecurity in the country.
The cleric called on philanthropists, religious organizations, and humanitarian groups to prioritize efforts to combat illiteracy and provide educational opportunities for all Nigerian children. He emphasized that education is essential for national security and urged the government to invest more resources in the education sector.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo echoed Bishop Kukah’s sentiments, urging the Rotary club to redouble its efforts in promoting education and serving humanity. He emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges and called on participants to use the conference as an opportunity to make a positive impact on society.
